Coach Potato to Mountain Climber – Paul Russell

Paul catches the out of doors bug whereas summiting his first peak

For a few years I’ve been a devoted sofa potato, doing little or no train, glued to the TV watching Sky Soccer, having a glass or two of wine and the odd beers, and for being so brief at 5 foot 3’ this sedentary life-style noticed me weigh in at 12 stone 8.  Plump to say the least.

Then in January 2011 my work colleagues invited me to climb Snowdon.  I had little or no, if any gear, for this, so visited GO Open air retailer in Basildon and began to purchase the necessaries.  Snowdon was exhausting for me. I practically gave up half method however was edged on by one or two of my co-workers and summitted efficiently. I used to be ecstatic and obtained the out of doors bug!!  I wished extra. It was at this hike that my Boss determined we should always go to see if we might do Mont Blanc and do it for charity.

To assist put together for Mont Blanc, we’d try and do Scafel Pike & Brecon Beacons.  The primary didn’t go properly for me as I suffered ligament harm and ended up having to attend 16 periods of physio-therapy. Nevertheless, in mid summer season on a gale pressure and really moist day, I efficiently did three peaks on the Brecon’s.  I used to be extraordinarily proud and completely satisfied.

Previous to coaching I did a number of different charity occasions; firstly I did the color half marathon for A number of Sclerosis (13 miles) after which tried the Yorkshire Three Peaks for the British Coronary heart Basis.  I solely achieved two out of the three peaks as my knee was performing up once more and I used to be struggling dangerous blisters.

So for Mont Blanc.  I purchased all my tools at GO Open air, Grivel Crampons G12, Mountain trousers, Scarpa Jorasses Professional GTX Mountaineering Boots B3, Axe and all that goes with climbing within the Alps.

On the tenth September 2011 for seven days eight of us tried to climb Europe’s highest mountain.   Sadly, solely three of us succeeded after Altitude illness obtained the higher of us. I used to be one. Nevertheless, I climbed rock faces, partitions of snow, and obtained to 11,000 toes.  It was nice.  I now know the way to use crampons and ice axes, and what gear works, what you want and what you in all probability don’t.  The boots had been very good as had been the crampons.

The rest of the yr – extra hikes and searching ahead to many winter walks.  Subsequent yr – who is aware of however the out of doors life fashion is now for me – and I’m taking my sons as much as Snowdon in October.
